Apple Pie:
Ingredients: Crust:
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup unsalted butter, cold and cut into small pieces
- 1/4 to 1/2 cup ice water
Filling:
- 6-7 cups peeled, cored, and thinly sliced apples
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
Instructions:
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour and salt for the crust. Add the cold butter pieces and use a pastry cutter or your fingers to cut the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Gradually add the ice water, a few tablespoons at a time, and mix until the dough comes together. Divide the dough in half and shape each half into a disk. Wrap the disks in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice for the filling. Toss until the apples are coated.
- On a lightly floured surface, roll out one disk of the chilled dough into a circle large enough to fit into a 9-inch pie dish. Place the rolled dough into the dish and gently press it into the bottom and sides.
- Pour the apple filling into the pie crust, spreading it evenly.
- Roll out the second disk of dough and place it over the filling. Trim any excess dough and crimp the edges to seal the pie.
- Make a few slits on the top crust to allow steam to escape.
- Optional: Brush the top crust with milk or beaten egg and sprinkle with sugar.
- Place the pie on a baking sheet to catch any drips and bake for 45-55 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbly.
- Allow the pie to cool for at least 2 hours before slicing and serving.
